    Simple Tangy Balkan Potato Salad

This simple tangy Balkan potato salad is probably the most beloved potato salad that’s popular in almost any Balkan country. Of course, the variations of this salad are endless, but this is the most common and simple one that you can find on the table in almost every household.

You can serve this simple tangy Balkan potato salad warm straight after making it, or you can make it the day before and serve it cold straight out the fridge. Because this potato salad is fresh and tangy it goes great with any kind of meat, from braised to grilled meat. Or you can use it as a small side dish for a more heavy meal that needs a little bit of freshness.

For this particular recipe we’ve steamed the potatoes in a steaming basket, since we find that they’re easier to handle after they’re cooked (you don’t have to peel hot potatoes). Steaming the potatoes is also faster and they don’t absorb as much water as the boiled potatoes. Of course, you can also boil the your potatoes if that’s more convenient and easier for you.

The traditional way is to use lots of black pepper, but if you don’t like the heat that the black pepper gives or you don’t like to have black specks in your potato salad, use white pepper instead. If you like, you can also add some fresh herbs like dill or parsley, but the simplest version of this salad doesn’t contain any herbs.

This simple tangy Balkan potato salad recipe uses spring onions, since they’re in season, but feel free to use yellow or red onion if spring onion is not available. If you use red or yellow onion, use 1/2 small onion and chop it finely or chop it into really thin slices and separate the layers so you’ll get long thin onion strips.

    Steps

    1
    Done

    Cook the potatoes

Wash and peel the potatoes, cut them in chunks and place them in a steaming basket. Fill the pot with small amount of water, place the steaming basket in it and steam the potatoes for 30-40 minutes, or until the potatoes are cooked.

    2
    Done

    Cool the potatoes

Remove the steaming basket from the pot and allow the potatoes to cool down slightly. Once they're cool enough to handle, cut the potatoes into bite size pieces and transfer them into a bowl.

    3
    Done

    Season the salad

Chop the spring onion and add it to the bowl. Add the vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper and mix everything gently so you won't break the potatoes. Serve the simple tangy Balkan potato salad on a plate and garnish with chopped spring onion.
