    French Salad – Francuska Salata

This creamy salad actually has nothing to do with France. Why it’s called French Salad (Francuska salata – Француска салата) we have no idea. The only thing that we know is that this salad is really delicious and it’s an essential part of any party or festivity. This salad is also perfect for any barbecue gathering because it goes really well with grilled meat.

Like the other creamy salads like the Balkan Style Macaroni Salad and Russian Salad, the French salad is popular item at any festive table. But there is a difference between the French Salad (Francuska Salata) and the other salads. What is different is that the French Salad (Francuska Salata) doesn’t contain mayonnaise but thick yogurt.

Each and every family has its own recipe of making French Salad (Francuska salata). Some people like to add boiled eggs, potatoes, dill or mustard to it. But this one is the most basic and it’s incredibly delicious.

Before making this French Salad (Francuska salata) here are few tips that can be really useful:

    • If you can’t find thick yogurt, just use normal plain yogurt and strain it. Take a bowl, place a large colander on it and line the colander with a cheesecloth. Slowly pour the plain yogurt into the colander and gently cover it with plastic wrap. Place the colander in the fridge for couple of hours (or overnight) and you’ll have thick strained yogurt.
    • If you don’t have ricotta available, just use grated feta cheese. But be careful when adding salt to the salad because feta cheese is quite salty. If you can’t find feta cheese either, you can use cottage cheese too. Another thing that you can do is to make simple cheese by heating milk to 90°C (200°F – just below boiling) and adding lemon juice to it.
    • Make sure you drain the cucumber cubes very well otherwise your salad will be too watery. Your salad will still be good to eat it just doesn’t look good.
    • To make the cucumbers drain faster, sprinkle the cubes with a little bit of salt before laying them on a clean tea towel or cheesecloth. You can also lay them on paper towels, but we found that the cucumber cubes tend to stick to the paper towels and it’s harder to remove them.

    Chop the ingredients

Chop (or crush) the walnuts into small pieces. Chop the ham into very small cubes (1/8 inch or 5 mm). Peel and chop the cucumbers into very small cubes. Crush the garlic with a garlic press or chop it finely.

    Drain the ingredients

Sprinkle a pinch of salt on the cucumber cubes, mix them and lay the cubes on a clean tea towel or cheesecloth to drain the liquid from them. Lay a cheesecloth in a large colander and gently add the ricotta and thick yogurt to drain any excess liquid. Drain the ingredients for 30-60 minutes. You can also drain them overnight, just place them in your fridge.

    Mix the ingredients

Place all of the ingredients in a large bowl and mix them well. Season the salad with salt to taste.

    Chill the salad

Place the salad in the fridge and chill it overnight to let all of the flavors to mix together.
